Why New Zealand must act on Water Care

Did you know that water makes up 70% of the world’s surface, with expansive oceans that separate continents, countries and citizens? Plus, well over half of the human body is made up of water as well! This begs the question - why is clean water so scarce and what can we do about it?

The issue of gaining access to water, when we are seemingly ‘swimming’ in it, has the mind boggled. Currently, Northland, Hawkes Bay, and many parts of the South Island has declared a state of drought emergency. With insufficient rainfall, there is also not enough water available for many essential activities to support household necessities, irrigation for food growth, and to nourish the haven of flora and fauna in New Zealand.

Therefore, the water debate covers a plethora of issues. Another prominent danger is the lack of access to water to New Zealand’s most populous metropolitan, Auckland. Currently, the city’s water is at a critical stage, with citizens advised to conserve all water. But how do 1.5 million Aucklanders do that?

Water care, solely owned by the Auckland Council, is promoting Waterwise tips which
encourage a culture and lifestyle change amongst Aucklanders, as well as the wider

New Zealand community. Basic suggestions include:
● Water-wise appliances
● A dual-flush or ‘low water’ toilet
● A rainwater collection system for watering your garden
● Turn the shower on only when you’re ready to get in
● Clean your car with a bucket of water and sponge
● Don’t run your dishwasher or washing machine until you have a full load
● Water plants early in the morning
● Accept a dry lawn over the summer

By each individual taking heed of these simple habits, we can ensure that we have enough water for generations to come.
